The Work Experience of Occupational Therapists Providing Vocational Rehabilitation Services to Mentally Disabled People: A Phenomenological Study

Abstract

|
Objective : This study attempted to understand the role, task, and prospects of vocational therapists in the field of vocational rehabilitation in the future by understanding the work experience of vocational therapists providing vocational rehabilitation services to mentally disabled people.
Methods : In-depth interviews were conducted with eight occupational therapists who provide vocational rehabilitation services to mentally disabled people by applying Zorgi s phenomenological research method. Interview videos were recorded with prior consent, and the recorded data were analyzed according to the Collage 6-step phenomenon analysis method.
Results : Three themes, nine concepts, 19 semantic units, and 60 central meanings were derived. The role of occupational therapists in providing vocational rehabilitation services was found to be counselors, evaluators, mediators, and links. Future tasks and prospects were curriculum, vocational rehabilitation expense system reform, and vocational consciousness re-establishment. In addition, for successful vocational rehabilitation, the employment location and the effect of vocational rehabilitation were mentioned.
Conclusions : The results of this study presented tasks and prospects to be improved in the field of vocational rehabilitation for occupational therapists who provide vocational rehabilitation services for the mentally disabled, and could be used as guidelines and basic data to cultivate more professional vocational rehabilitation experts in the future.
